Sport-specific training sounds logical. But for young athletes, the bigger question is whether training is building the athlete — or simply repeating the sport.
If you’ve spent any time around youth sport, you’ve probably heard the phrase:
“They need more sport-specific training.”
It sounds logical. If a young athlete plays netball, rugby, football, cricket or fencing, surely their training should look like their sport?
The answer is: not always.
To understand why, we need to look at the bigger picture: Long-Term Athlete Development, often referred to as LTAD.
Long-Term Athlete Development is a framework that helps guide how young athletes should train at different stages of growth and maturity.
The key point is simple:
Children are not mini adults.
Their bodies, brains, movement skills and confidence are still developing. Because of that, training should not simply copy what we see in adult or elite sport.
Sport-specific training can be useful at the right time, but for young athletes it is often overused or misunderstood.
Too much sport-specific work too early can narrow development, increase stress on the same tissues and limit the physical qualities that help athletes progress long term.
Young athletes need variety. They need to learn how to:
If training only repeats the same sport patterns, athletes can miss the chance to build a broader movement foundation.
Repeating the same movements all year round can contribute to overuse, poor mechanics and physical imbalances.
This is especially relevant for young athletes who are growing quickly, playing multiple times per week, and often competing across school, club and academy environments.
The goal should not just be to make an athlete slightly better this weekend.
The goal is to build an athlete who can keep improving over months and years.
If we rush into specialisation too early, we may miss the chance to develop the qualities that matter later: strength, speed, coordination, robustness and confidence.
In the early and middle stages of development, young athletes benefit most from building a strong physical foundation.
Sport-specific training should sit on top of good movement, strength, speed and coordination — not replace them.
Athletes should learn how to squat, hinge, push, pull, rotate, land and control their body well.
Strength training for young athletes is not about bodybuilding or lifting as heavy as possible. It is about learning positions, building control and developing the physical capacity to tolerate sport.
Sprint mechanics, rhythm, agility and change of direction all help young athletes move better, regardless of their sport.
A more rounded athlete is usually better prepared to adapt, learn skills, tolerate training loads and progress over time.
As athletes get older, more experienced and physically developed, training can become more targeted.
But even then, the foundation still matters.
Sport-specific training is most useful when it is layered on top of good general physical preparation.
Before adding more “sport-specific” work, ask:
Is this building them as an athlete, or just repeating their sport?
If a young athlete is already doing hours of technical practice and matches each week, the gym should not simply become another version of the same thing.
